Monch Tous

Checked out the mighty Pharoah Monch at 93 Feet East last night and damn was it sweaty!!
Despite a severe lack of air con (it must have been 8000 degrees in there last night) and a uber-lame pre-gig selection (the entire best of De La Soul on CD-wtf!) it was a killer gig.

Pharoahe took it back to basics with a stripped down dj/mc/backing singers combo, mixing tracks from his forthcoming album ‘Desire’ with enough back-catalogue bangers to  get the crowd going nuts (despite the sauna -like conditions. The monche is an MC on top of his gameand his new album is sounding amazing. ‘Let’s Go’ the opening track of the night is pure uncut party monster and ‘Push’ is encapsulates all the things that made me love hiphop in the first place -a great break, a wicked flow, a positive message and a incredible sense of taking forward something of the black soul music tradition.

Anyway needless to say ‘Simon says..’ caused a riot and there was alot of love for the moche from the audience all night, even to the point of forgiving a pretty rubbish encore and an error prone dj interlude. First and foremost the guy came across like someone  who was serious about his music, serious about getting people to listen the complex, heartfelt messages in his flow and with the calibre of his new shit being as it is who would bet against him ?

Check out the mighty spinemagazine for upcoming pharaohe tracks.
