Jacksoul

The best kind of soul music is one that manages to be part fevered love song and part desperate prayer. It doesn’t matter the proportions of each, but it must have both. Soul music is the one kind that, by definition, you can’t fake. You could have the voice of marvin, the songwriting of stevie and mfsb as your backing band but without a little piece of your own undisputed truth, it won’t mean a damn thing.
When a few hundred copies of this 12′ turned up in Mr Bongo, back in ‘96, nobody knew anything about the band Jacksoul. That probably added to the appeal. No vibey guerrilla marketing campaign, no mentions in the hype sections of lifestyle magazines just one 12″ with two incredible tracks appearing (and disappearing) as if by magic.
Of the two, I have chosen ‘Unconditional’ cause it’s a stone cold classic.
Beyond the simple refrain,this track has a passion and an honesty that moves and inspires in equal measure. It is a world away from the ‘hey baby-I jus’ got a get wit you’ vibe that has become the default setting for contemporary soul and finds a way of saying something familiar in an unfamiliar way.
I always thought these guys were one hit wonders (so I didn’t feel to bad using a version of their name to dj with), turns out their still making great soul music in their native Canada.
